(the forgotten momentos series)
MIDTERM PROJECTThis series is based in Boulder, Colorado. The Forgotten Momentos series is a collection of photographs that depicts the lifestyles, possessions, politics, and even artistic sensibilities of a human being, without showing a singular face. Instead, it emphasizes the abandoned pieces of evidence which ultimately suggest the existence of humanity. These pieces of evidence include graffiti, logos, objects, and signs. For example, the WE DIG AMERICA image is the slogan for the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), and was taken when photographing one of their trucks parked on Folsom Street. The purpose of this is so the viewer - despite their own personal identity - is given the opportunity to project themselves to any narrative(s) that can be found within the photograph. Thus, a sense of importance as well as objectivity is added to these pieces of evidence that perhaps the person who first interacted with didn’t intend.
I was able to capture these images by following my own developed methodology: traveling in a singular direction and taking snapshots along the way until I am eventually forced to return back home due to nightfall, weather, and/or my camera’s low battery. The primary goal of this method is to explore an area of my community I am not familiar with while also giving myself the opportunity to photograph something familiar but foreign. For example, during this process I encountered a community garden in northern Boulder that I wasn’t previously aware of. I hope to one day return to this garden in late Spring or early summer so I can see it in all its glory. Of all the images I’ve taken for this series, the garden will probably be the only piece of evidence to remain after five years.
