EVIDENCE ASSIGNMENT

(the forgotten momentos series)

When first working within the restrictions of this assignment, my first thought was to directly showcase the lives of people in all their glory. However, I chose to approach this idea of evidence by capturing the so-called forgotten mementos of mankind’s mysterious existence. For example, this photo series depicts the lifestyles, possessions, politics, and even artistic senses of the wider Boulder community without showing a singular human face and/or name. All that is shown are little pieces of evidence that showcase the life of a person that exists on the street. It adds a level of importance to an object that perhaps the person who first interacted with it didn’t intend. Rather, this importance is only recognized by the audience as they are allowed to attach their own narrative(s) to the object and the person behind it.

I was able to capture these photos by following my own developed methodology: walking in a singular direction and taking snapshots along the way until I was forced to turn back home due to nightfall, weather, and/or low battery. The primary goal of this method is to find a part of my community that I don’t even recognize. I was thankful enough to achieve this goal during this two week process by discovering a community garden in northern boulder that I wasn’t previously aware of; the second to last image of this series is of that garden. Which despite its weakening appearance - it was beautiful.
